I am pretty much new to shop work and this is more for hobby and common sense. I figure all men should know the tools they carry and the ones they need. While I had a broad idea of shop references, measurements and exact nomenclature were lost to me unless I had the part on hand. This book is but the beginning for me in regards to reference material, but I do like the compact size which makes it handy to drop in my go bag or to have on the work bench shelf.

Cons : Hard to navigate. Too much information for most students. Suggested Improvements : Add some type of tab system to easily find sections or have a dedicated section for frequently used information. Overall : Good for most applications. This is really the standard reference for most Universities so you may be stuck there.
For professional machining you'll probably need to have the full Machinists Handbook. Very poorly edited. There are two sections that specifically try to explain tapping speeds but they repeat the exact same information.
Also, one of the sections is pulled straight from the machinery's handbook and references tables that do not appear in this book. When you look up this topic in the index it points you to the section that refers to the missing tables and makes no mention of the other section. Again, very poorly edited.
I do not recommend it. This is basically the machinist handbook except with alot less info and it's formated terribly. Just buy the machinist handbook, if you are so worried about saving money buy last year's edition and you can get it for the same price as this garbage. I found this book very disappointing. There are many sentences that are just flat out missing words. The writer apparently doesn't understand the difference between a worm and a worm gear.
Students and apprentices are already lost enough, they don't need a bad reference to make them more lost. Chock full of all the basic info you need straight from machinery's handbook. The handy shop reference pdf download is small just like in MH, but the type is crisp and legible. Perhaps I didn't do my research well enough. The material in this book comes straight out of the Machinerys Handbook. If you have that, you don't need this.
